Thank you for your interest in setting up a booth at the Back To School Picnic and Fundraiser. It will be held at Pleasant Grove on Saturday, August 17th from 10am - 3pm. Here are some things you will want to know:
As far as the "why" of the event, it is 2-fold. First, it is to promote an interest in education for this school year through some fun exhibits / booths that showcase learning. We wanted to target the middle and high school aged kids primarily, since that is usually when kids start asking "Why do I have to learn that?" and testing seems to take precedence over just plain learning. There will be plenty of things for younger-aged kids as well.
Second, the kids are looking to help purchase new laptops for those public school teachers who are trying to make do on broken and outdated ones. The SB said it would take about $64k to get them. We don't expect to reach that goal with 1 day event, but know that every little bit will help.
In addition to the interactive educational booths, there will be various food vendors and some "just for fun" and games areas. The highlight will be a Duck Race down the Rivanna. (rubber ducks, not real ones) We will also be selling FlucoSpirit pants - plaid pants with the Fluvanna logo on them.
*We are requesting a non-refundable $10 placeholder fee to reserve your exhibit spot. When you arrive to set up, you will receive a voucher for specified free food and bottles of water to be redeemed during the picnic as our way of saying thank you for participating. The fee can be mailed to us @ Students For Teachers PO Box 152 Palmyra, VA 22963. Please include your name, address, email, and description of your booth with your deposit.
*All activities need to be family-friendly and non-dangerous. Booths are intended to promote education, whether formally or by the introduction of potential new hobbies/interests. SFT will not be held liable for any accidents or injuries connected with the event.
*Interactive is the goal of each booth. Be creative and have fun! We are planning to award a Best Booth prize for the most interesting and most visited booth at the picnic. SFT members will be the judges and all decisions are final.
*We are still working on obtaining sponsorships for non-profit groups (such as school clubs) and participating individuals (such as teachers) to help defray some of the costs of running a booth. If you are interested in learning more about this, please ask. Also note: we cannot guarantee any specific amount until closer to the date, so please plan accordingly.
*You will probably want to bring a tent or other shade-giving cover. Most booth spaces will be out in the fields where there is no other shade. Tables, chairs, etc. are also the responsibility of each booth-holder.
